Its Friday and still thinking SIPA. COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY - SIPA Admissions Blog Its Friday and all day the halls were bustling with activity even though there are very few classes going on in the International Affairs Building today.   The academic year has begun and for the next eight months IAB will be busy.   After leaving a financial aid meeting, it was refreshing to join students at the Welcome Back reception.   The fascinating stories of our students summer adventures and their plans to better the global community   makes our job of getting them here worthwhile. Osarogiagbon, MD By Wale Akinbobola A week ago I met with Mr. Nick Faris, Manager – Systems Project, to discuss the Data Manager position at the Baptist Cancer Center. During our meeting I learned about the various research projects being conducted at the Baptist Cancer Center. We specifically discussed two projects. 1. The R01 (Lymph Node Examination in Resected Lung Cancer) project and 2. PCORI (Building a Multidisciplinary Bridge across the quality chasm in Thoracic Oncology) project. The R01 project is about improving the quality of lung cancer through surgery by using a special specimen collection kit to examine the lymph node yield as cancer spreads through the nodes. The purpose of this research is not only to prove that the kit works, but also to prove that it works in many different environments. The PCORI project scope is to measure the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary model of care for lung cancer patients. According to SEER Stat Fact Sheets http://seer.cancer.gov/statfacts/html/lungb.html the rate of people surviving for 5 years or more after being diagnosed with lung is only 17.7%. Considering this alarming low rate of the years of survivor, the objective of partnering together with various specialists to provide the best care for the lung cancer patient, as well as, involving the patients in the decision of their care was really exciting and intriguing to me. The NCAA division 1-A football is different from the rest of the sports in that it uses the BCS system to determine its champions instead of the normal playoff system. The BCS includes a polling system to determine the two best teams in the country, who then play against each other at a bowl game and the team that wins becomes the overall national champion. It has been said to be a very complicated formula and less preferred than the play off system. Others say that the true champion can only be determined in the field, so the BCS system should be denounced. This is a well put phrase, in that out of the possible 28 games, only one game counts. If a play off system was adopted, then the fans would have 16 team playoff matches to watch, which is obviously much more exciting compared to watching just one determining game. (Bruce Varnadore, Will College football ever have a playoff? ) The BCS system was modified in 2004 and some champion determinants such as the records set by the team, how strong their schedule is and numbers of their wins were eliminated. The new system then included polling, where the coaches and the Associated Press writers were required to vote in order to determine the champions. This means that the voter’s influence on who the champions should be in the current system is two-thirds, compared to that of the old system which was only a quarter, which makes the situation even worse than before. (James Alder, About. com). The National Council of Athletic Association should adopt the playoff instead of the BCS system that is still in use. It does not seem to understand that the best and most legitimate manner that a champion can be crowned is through establishing a playoff system. They may say that the BCS is a far much better way to look for a champion among American colleges, but the truth of the matter is that it is not. I believe that a champion should defend his title at the pitch through the action he shows, not by being voted in. This would not only create a lot of excitement for the fans, but it would also give more meaning and gusto to the beginning of the year. Arguments for the playoff. The playoff system would generate as much money as the BSC system. The estimated cash in flows are estimated to be between three to four hundred million dollars, and if this money was distributed fairly among all division 1-A schools, then each school could get approximately 2. 5 million dollars every season. (Bruce Varnadore, will college football ever have a playoff? ) Deserving teams that have good players and who’ve got game are denied the chance to be in the competition for the national championship title. Such teams as the BYU, a non conference team, are not given an equal chance and are therefore left out. This is not only a waste of talent, but is also shows unfairness. The playoff system would establish who the champion is through a one on one competition among all the teams. This is the much preferred bowl among many football fans. A recent opinion poll showed that most people prefer the playoff system than the BSC system. The results were such that 82 percent of the respondents would love to see a change in the current bowl games system, BSC to a playoff. The playoff system has also been favored because it would at least minimize the doubts concerning who the national champions should be even if it would not completely eliminate them. The play off system would work out just as fine as it does in the other season’s games. Those in favor of the BSC system have said that the playoff would take a longer season and student players would not have enough time to concentrate on their academic work. However, this is not true because the division 1-AA applies a 16 team playoff system, and most times finishes ten days to the New Year, much earlier than the division 1-A games. It would also be much easier to implement the aforementioned system just as the NCAA implemented the BSC system. Arguments against the BSC system. Firstly, the basis on which a national champion is selected is unfair because it is based on statistics of people’s preference and personal opinion instead on the performance in the pitch. Secondly, there have always been controversies on who the real winner should have been had the game not been judged on the polls, but on action performance. Thirdly, just a single off game can cause the team to be eliminated from the championship contention, and finally, the minor non-BSC conference teams are often disadvantaged because they never get the chance to contend at the championship games. These are just but a few of the many shortcomings of the BSC system that make the fans of the game wonder why the NCAA won’t just adopt the playoff system. (James Alder, About. com). I think its time that the NCAA woke up, realize that this is the 21st century and bring a lot more excitement to the field. The empty seats at many of the bowl games should be enough indicators to them. Moreover, the idea of â€Å"preserving the culture and the integrity of bowl games† has been labeled as a lame excuse to avoid implementing the playoff system. They need to know that football fans deserve the kind of action there used to be just a few years ago, from Rose, Sugar and Gator to the big games at Orange bowl. The book of Isaiah Isaiah was trying to get the people of Israel to live exclusively according to the righteousness and justice of God. Rather than emulate the nations of Babylon, Assyrian and Egypt. Isaiah has a very clear notion of what justice is and that is the fair treatment of disadvantaged. He mentioned and the psalms mentioned this often and other prophet mentioned this and that is there are three special classes of people in Israel that are to be treated with special care, which are: the orphans, the widows and the strangers. You determine the justice of a society based on how they treat the orphans, the widows and the stranger. Now what do those three have in common? What an orphan and a widow have in common is no father, no male and no patriots. The patriot was the center of all authority and power. All inheritance passes from the patriot to the next patriot and so if you are a widow without a husband or an orphan without a father, you are not part of social power of society. You have not power because it is passed from male to male. The stranger are those people in Egypt who also came out with Moses and the Israelite in the exodus but they where not kin or decedents of Abraham, but they to were part of the protection and blessing of God from the exodus. The strangers were from a different ethical group. Everybody belongs somewhere in the world because in the book of number's it say I have access to land. The strangers had no access to any form of property, God blesses them but when they left Egypt they had no place to live. So the orphans, the widows and the stranger's do not have access to social power. They are what you call the disadvantage. Time and time again, Isaiah, the prophets and the psalms would tell us that we must treated these people fairly because according to Deuteronomy chapter 14 verse 29 (although he said Leviticus) 10% of what you have should go to the orphans, widows and strangers. This is justice. Isaiah form of justice is treating those who cannot take care of themselves fairly. Righteousness according to Isaiah is the right worship of God, which is we really recognize the uniqueness of God. That is one of the reasons why several time throughout Isaiah insults the idols. Righteousness is the right worship and the exclusive worship of God, while justice is to carry those who cannot carry themselves. Chapter 51 verse 17 The reason why Jerusalem is such a devastated and destructive place is because they wanted to emulate the other nations. In Romeo And Juliet, Dramatic irony was used a lot, as the audience know that the end is trag ic because of the prologue, but the characters do not know.The characters speech in Act 1 scene 5 shows the contrast of characters; with those who speak in prose are lowborn, servants, and those who speak in blank verse or rhyme are noble, higher, main characters. O, She doth teach the torches to burn bright! It seems she hangs upon the cheek of night He uses rhyming couplets and portrays Juliet as light, and beautiful compared to everything else. When Romeo and Juliet speak to each other for the first time, they are spe aking in a sonnet, mirroring each others words. They are literally in a world of their own, as they are separate from all the other characters on stage, and the audience is focused on them, even though there is still a party in the background. Romeo and Juliet are having the same amount of lines and important words, such as hands or lips, which shows their mutual feeling, and their true and pure love is shown by their sensitive behaviour and their speaking of hands and lips. To some this may seem flirtatious, but there is religious imagery included, such as; And palm to palm is holy palmers kiss. Juliet is speaking here of the pilgrims that touch the hands of the saints statues in church, and how significant they are, relating them to a kiss. She is literally telling Romeo that he may either touch her hand or kiss her, which makes their love for each other more pure and innocent.The last theme is Fate. Romeo seems to hint a foreboding sense of unease; Ay, so I fear, to more is my un rest. And Juliet speaks of love and death; My grave is like to be my wedding bed. These are premonitions, as what they speak of actually happens later in the play. They also show dramatic irony, as the audience already know what will happen in the end from the prologue.The plot shows cultural traditions and setting of the time, with the family honour of the people of Verona. Tybalt is insulted by Romeos presence at the party, and is honourable to his family. Uncle, this is a Montague, our foe; A villain, that is hither come in spite, To scorn at our solemnity this night his aggression shows that he is an violent and reckless character.At Capulets party, they are to introduce Juliet to Paris, but Juliet does not fall in love with Paris, but with Romeo instead. The party also shows that Capulet has a large house with many servants and a large, full table of food and drink available for anyone who would like to take advantage of this. Come, lets away, the strangers are all gone. This t ells us that he would invite strangers into his house so they would enjoy themselves. This shows his status as quite high for that time, because people of that time were known for their kindness and generosity.The development of the plot shows the characters relationships and motivations grow. More action is introduced, and the audience become tense from the storyline. This scene is very significant towards the rest of the play, and is a significant piece of drama in that way, as the whole production of Romeo and Juliet is a very significant piece of drama itself.
